Ruler of the Sea (Genesis 1)
“Let the waters … be gathered…, and let the dry land appear.”
Genesis 1:9, 10
God asked Job, “…who shut up the sea with doors, … and brake up for it My decreed place, and set bars and doors, and said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?” Job 38:8, 10, 11. “Fear ye not Me? saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at My presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart….” Jer. 5:22, 23. The “God of our salvation” “stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.” Psalm 65:7.
Sometimes He calls us to go “through water” (Psalm 66:12), but He has promised to be with us (Isa. 43:2). Sometimes He parts the sea again to create dry land for us to advance to the Promised Land, as He did for ancient Israel (Exo. 14:21, 22). Sometimes He enables us to walk on top of the water as we fix our gaze upon Him (Mat. 14:29), and sometimes He speaks the word and the troubled seas are calm (Mat. 8:26). One thing is sure: Whether the troubled waters are without or within, at His bidding they must obey. “Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, Thou stillest them.” Psalm 89:9. It is safe to trust Him whom “even the winds and the sea obey” and yet takes notice of the humblest sparrow that falls.
Who can refuse to obey the Ruler of the seas? Yet many do. May the Lord rule every proud wave in my heart, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Cor. 10:5.
